Garmin

The GPSMAP 76 is an older model that is a great bargain because of the reduced price. Tough on the outside, waterproof and yes, it even floats. Garmin use the term "versatile navigator" on the outside of the box... the unit is at home anywhere…on land, on the water, in a car, in the bush, on the tundra. The built-in base map with cities, coastlines, nautical navaids, lakes, rivers, interstates, and interstate exit information gets you started into the world of GPS with maps. Garmin's MapSource CD-ROMs let you add a limited area of high resolution street, road, topographic or marine maps for almost anywhere in the world.

The 8 MB of internal map memory is limiting, but will not be a problem for loading maps of a limited geographic area - if you need lots of maps to be loaded at once in your GPS, look at the newer colour-screen models with microSD memory cards. But for the right customer, this unit is a terrific price. Built-in WAAS satellite differential correction gives 3m accuracy (5m in marginal WAAS conditions, 8m outside of WAAS coverage). The external antenna jack makes it easy to add an external antenna for increased convenience and accuracy.

The large high resolution (180 x 240 pixel !) display measuring 1.6"W x 2.2"H and gives users a clear view of the maps and GPS navigation screens.

Like all Garmin GPS units, this unit is software upgradable, which means you'll always have the latest version of the GPS operating system... free of charge (it's a simple file download from Garmin's website).

Note: This unit has the same physical connector as the GPS12XL, etc. and therefore if you are upgrading from another unit with the round, 4-pin style connector, your cables will work with this unit. And if you later upgrade to a newer colour-screen 60 or 76 units, the cable for this unit will work with the new models!
